HS Ground breaking for new gym

SAVE revenue funds projects at high school and elementary schools

HAMPTON, IOWA — Members of the Hampton-Dumont Community School District Board of Education and administration took part in a groundbreaking ceremony July 9 to celebrate the construction of a new competition gymnasium.

The gym is one of several projects being funded with statewide one-cent sales tax revenue that Hampton-Dumont CSD receives from the Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) fund, which supports school infrastructure improvements. The total SAVE amount secured by the district for these projects is $13.4 million. These SAVE projects are separate from the bond referendum that did not pass in November 2023. The SAVE funds also cannot be used for salaries or curriculum.

The new gymnasium will have seating capacity of 1,500 and is located at the high school campus in Hampton. This venue is scheduled to open in August 2025. The current gymnasium will be used for practice, and youth and varsity tournaments.

Additional projects at the high school made possible with SAVE revenue bonds include a new activities entrance and lobby; renovation of the art and science classrooms; updates to restrooms and locker rooms; and site and parking improvements.

New entrances for improved safety and security are planned at North Side Elementary and South Side Elementary. Additional improvements at South Side include a main office renovation and relocation to the front of the building to also include the school’s nurse and principal; a vestibule serving the playground; HVAC systems, and the addition of a bus drop-off and pick-up area and staff parking lot northwest of the school.

The elementary school projects are scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2024-25 school year.

Hampton-Dumont CSD has partnered with Emergent Architecture and Larson Construction to design and construct these SAVE projects.
